How much does the actual radiator cost?

Radiator prices can vary quite a bit, depending on the size, style and material it's made out of.

It's worth noting that most styles will be available in both central heating (plumbed) and electric versions. If you're not sure which boiler you have, or if your system is compatible with a new radiator, a qualified plumber or heating engineer will be able to advise.

Here’s what you can expect to pay for just the radiator itself, keeping in mind that prices vary depending on the material.

What other factors affect the cost of replacing a radiator?

There are often many other factors that will affect the final cost of replacing a radiator, such as the BTU rating, how many radiators your getting installed, and who you end up booking with.

1. Whether your relocating the radiator

Replacing a radiator isn’t always as straightforward as just swapping out the old one. If you’re relocating a radiator, installing a new one where there wasn’t one before, or switching from an electric heater to a plumbed-in radiator, you’ll likely need to budget extra for pipework modifications, valves, and possibly new thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs).

2. Who you book with

When shopping around for quotes, you might find that sole traders are cheaper than larger, professional tradesperson services. However, these more established companies often come with plenty of benefits, such as better availability, instant online booking, and a dedicated customer support team ready to assist if anything goes wrong.

3. BTU rating of the radiator

The BTU rating measures how much heat a radiator can produce. Radiators with higher BTUs can warm larger rooms or colder spaces, but they usually cost more upfront. Picking the right BTU for your room size helps ensure efficient heating without paying for more than you need.

Your plumber will be able to advise on the best BTU rating for each room in your home.

4. How many radiators you're planning on replacing

If you’re planning to replace more than one radiator, it’s often cheaper to have them done all at once. Since most plumbers charge by the hour, doing multiple radiators in one visit can save you money on labour costs.

Can I replace a radiator myself?

It's almost always a good idea to call out a plumber for any plumbing work, and this includes replacing a radiator. Mistakes can result in leaks, damage to your central heating system, or inefficient heating. A professional plumber will ensure everything is done to regulation standards and safely.

If you're in a leasehold property, you'll also need to get Landlord permission, particularly if altering the plumbing setup. Understandably, it's typically easier to obtain this permission if you can demonstrate you've found fully insured, professioanl plumber to take on the work. [1]

Where can I find a qualified plumber to replace a radiator?

There's quite a few different ways you can find a plumber to replace a radiator. It's a good idea to start by asking around any friends and family to check if they've had any plumbing work done recently. If they have, they may be able to introduce you to their plumber. Local groups and pages on social media often have good reccomondations too, along with photos of previous work.

It's also worth checking out tradespeople directory sites or a specialist tradesperson service like Housekeep. You can get a price for a radiator replacement through the Housekeep website. Just let us know what needs doing, and we'll send a fully qualfied and insured plumber at a time and date that suits you. If you'd prefer your plumber to source your new radiator for you - that's no problem. We'll just add this to your final bill.
